While the dog and I were out enjoying her morning constitutional, we came across a tree at the edge of a wooded area with unusual fruit.

It has all the characteristics of a familiar cherry. But…it is yellow blending to pink, and has regularly-spaced, fleshy spikes.
I didn’t taste one, but for what it’s worth, the dog was completely uninterested. So we can at least rule out flavors of peanut butter, roast chicken, rockfish, and anything belonging to the cat.
I love foraging for food, and would love to know if this is edible. It would make some lovely preserves!
If you have any ideas about what this fruit is, please let me know.

Great news! It’s been confirmed by multiple sources…this is the fruit of a type of dogwood, Cornus Kousa. It’s not as showy as the ones I am used to seeing, and the flowers come out after the leaves, so it is easily missed. But it is more disease resistant, and yes, the fruit is edible! Now to go back and find that tree…
